Promo codes for a second purchase: encouraging customers to return

A packed order with a thank-you card and follow-up email on a phone.

Use a relevant follow-up offer to encourage a second purchase, with clear eligibility, sensible timing and a check on the resulting margin.

The first order introduces the customer to your business. The second shows that they found a reason to return. A promo code can support that next step, but it works best alongside a satisfactory first purchase, a relevant offer and a simple way to buy again.

Choose the next useful purchase

Think about what naturally follows the original order. A customer may need a refill, a complementary product or another appointment after a sensible interval. A generic discount sent immediately after every purchase can arrive before there is any new need.

For example, a store selling reusable coffee equipment might later suggest compatible filters or cleaning supplies. Explain the connection to the original purchase, rather than sending the same unrelated promotion to everyone.

Define the rules before sending the code

Specify eligible customers, products, minimum order value if applicable, expiry, permitted uses and whether offers can be combined. Show the conditions beside the offer and explain an invalid code at checkout in plain language.

These are practical configuration choices: for example, Shopify documents eligibility and usage controls for discount codes. Check the equivalent controls in your own system. A code labelled “personal” should actually be restricted appropriately, not merely look unique in the email.

Give the customer a clear route back

Link to the relevant product or service page and make the code easy to apply on a phone. Explain the final price before payment. If the customer has an unresolved delivery or service problem, deal with that first rather than automatically sending another sales message.

Test a small campaign and track how many eligible customers make a second completed purchase within a defined period. Review returns, discount cost and contribution after variable costs too. Redemptions alone do not prove that the offer created additional purchases.

Discuss repeat-purchase journeys with B2BWebs. The useful starting point is the customer’s next need, followed by the campaign rules and the information needed to measure the outcome.
